Open heart surgery wouldn't be possible if this great pioneer didn't come along. Michael DeBakey was the first doctor to do open heart surgery. He developed an artificial roller pump, letting the blood bypass during surgery. The roller pump was just the beginning. In 1942, DeBakey joined the Army working for the medical division. DeBakey developed the first artificial heart which is a big deal because the patient would live longer and live a healthier life. Michael DeBakey is truly a medical Pioneer.
