Merkel Minutes for April

Dear Parents,

Spring is abloom and so are the students. They are continuing to demonstrate growth in their social and academic skills. It is wonderful to see the progress the children have made since the beginning of the school year.

I have really enjoyed seeing the excitement and enthusiasm that the students have displayed in learning about the ocean. Each day they are eager to write something they know about the ocean in their journals. Mrs. Tejan has encouraged the students to use descriptive language in their writing to provide the reader a “good mental picture” of what they are writing about. The students are now in the final phase of publishing their poetry pieces.

Once this unit is concluded, the class will study the topics of spring, clouds, American Robins, and Earth Day. Mr. Dunn will be joining our class on April 25th to provide us with a special lesson on clouds.

In math this month, our students will be measuring a to-scale drawing of a humpback whale’s tail. They will do so by using both non-standard and standard measuring tools. We will also explore the topics of time and fractions. Also, we will continue to review the topics of addition/subtraction, money, counting, graphing, and writing numbers. Please support your child’s learning in this area by reviewing these concepts at home too.
