 Cyber SafetyMinimize

The Federal Trade Commission with other agencies has produced a cyber safety booklet for parents and teachers, Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online.

"Net Cetera tells parents and teachers what they need to know to talk to kids about issues like cyberbullying, sexting, mobile phone safety, and protecting the family computer. Talking to kids about these topics can help them avoid behaving rudely online; steer clear of inappropriate content like pornography, violence, or hate speech; and protect themselves from contact with bullies, predators, hackers, and scammers."

 Spelling Bee WinnersMinimize

The word for our Sandburg Spelling Bee on Wednesday was SPORTSMANSHIP. Our participants this year were incredible as they not only spelled well, but rooted for others who were spelling. This built a special atmosphere of camaraderie among the spellers. Our winners for the Sandburg Spelling Bee are: Riley N., 1st place; Bella H., 2nd-; Lauren F., 3rd place; and Briana M. in 4th place. Riley will represent Sandburg in the LPS District Bee. Our other top spellers were: Abby H., Erik B., Madeleine K., Allison M., Grace P., Sydney M., Drake S., Cole Q., and Bella S. The other place winners will compete against other top spellers in grades 4-8 district-wide in a written competition to possibly earn a place with Riley and other winners on the stage for the LPS District Spelling Bee on Feb. 10th at Powell Middle School’s Cafetorium.

 Shaddow Play PerformancesMinimize

During the last week before winter break, three classes performed in Sandburg's first ever "shadow plays". The students in Ms. Moriarty's, Mrs. Kearns' and Mrs. James' classes worked very hard to make this debut theatre show a success! This musical play was based on the story, "The First Music" by Dylan Pritchett. The story is based in the African forest, and every student played many parts in bringing the story to life. In a shadow play, there are many techniques that are used to tell the story: puppets, "live action", story tellers, and sound effects. All of this action was done behind a white screen which was mounted to the stage doors. The students worked very hard, and had a great time putting the show on for students, teachers and family members. A big THANK YOU goes out to Theresa Greichen, Dawn Wesselman and other parents that helped create the fantastic murals and beautiful velvet curtain that made the shadow theatre look so professional!

 Surprise Meeting!Minimize

Ms. Moriarty’s, Mrs. Kearns’, and Mrs. Egan’s classes toured the Capitol Building last week to support their learning about government. At the end of the trip, Mrs. Kearns’ class was taking a picture on the front steps when Governor Ritter walked by and decided to jump in the picture. The kids were so excited. (Dec. 18)

The Sandburg Spirit Singers (click link for photos), made up of 70 students, performed their holiday concert on December 9th for a packed gymnasium. The group sang many songs, including, “Sing We Now of Christmas,” “Shalom Chaverim,” and “A Cold In My Nose.” The choir was joined by Irish step dancer Sammy Walker and Arapahoe freshman, Melissa Merkel, playing the flute. Another violin soloist was Sandburg 5th grader William Peters. The concert was so much fun, and the choir sang incredibly well.

Kyle K., Julia K., Briana M., Peter S., Erik B., Sydney M., Natalie S., Tate F., and Christian S. wrote the news scripts and decided upon the props and photos to accompany their stories. The students spent recess and lunch times to practice. Thank you to Tate F. for designing our banner.

 Fun in the JungleMinimize

The Jungle Ropes Course at Sandburg is under way and once again a great time is had by everyone.  The Sandburg students have an opportunity to climb the large wall and see if they can ring the bell on top.  It is always so exciting when a child gets to the top or even reaches just a little bit further than they did the year before.  While some are climbing the wall other children have the opportunity to climb across the cargo net.  Our 1st graders did a great job going all the way across for the very first time.  The older students realize that the faster they climb across the more opportunities they will have.  Watching the children encourage each other a long the way is another added benefit.

The Jungle Ropes could not take place with out all the wonderful volunteers that come in and ensure our children's safety... but looking at their smiles it is hard to figure out who is having more fun the children or adults.

 Win-Win FridayMinimize

Friday, September 18, 2009 was our Win-Win Friday. On this early release day, our students: participated in the Heart Run, learned about recycling in a special presentation from Steven Newell, visited with Officer Rob Bratsch to learn about school safety, and participated in an Art Start (click for pictures) project coordinated by Julie Vincelette and PTO volunteers. While the students were involved in learning and enrichment activities, our teachers made every minute count as they worked in groups to discuss the individual needs of our learners. Thanks to everyone for their enthusiasm and support!
