 Simple MachinesMinimize

Third grade and E2/3 have been working on simple machines with Steven in the computer lab.  Teams of 2 used the netbooks to take pictures and make power point slides describing the simple machines that make up compound machines.  The teams are now building catapults and will have a contest to see who’s catapult can launch a marshmallow the farthest.

The Plains conservation center
By Aidan

We had a great time at the plains conservation center 2 weeks ago. We made our own food and slept in a Cheyenne tipi. The second day we had a big pancake breakfast in the soddie village as we dressed up and pretended to be pioneers. We had to do chores around the farm and even go to school like the pioneers did. We also played with cows and collected eggs from the chickens! The PCC was the best field trip ever!

Mrs. Smith’s and Mrs. Bast’s classes went to the Denver Aquarium on Feb. 27th as part of our Ocean unit. The children particularly enjoyed seeing all the different types of fish, the incredible tanks on their level, the flash flood, and petting the sting rays! Thanks to all the parents who attended with us!

 Net Books in ActionMinimize

A student in Mrs. Egan's class uses a netbook to research while his classmates measure, draw and cut out items to load in their pioneer wagons. He went and got a netbook without asking and proceeded to do google image searches to find out what items they wanted to bring, looked like. It was so great to see him use the netbook just as he would any other tool in the classroom.
Thank you to all the families at the auction that helped make this possible.

On Oct 22, the second grade classrooms were transformed into pilgrim colonies.  Each room contained a hands-on experience the children will never forget!

In Mrs. Egan's class, the students learned how labor intensive it was for the pilgrims to fix a feast by making homemade butter, cutting apples for applesauce and making vegetable soup.

In Mrs. Harmon's class, the girls made bonnets, while the boys made a 3-corner hat.  They also created a quilt piece that represents them, and played games that the pilgrim children played in 1620.

In Ms. Truman’s class, the children were able to see up close some of the tools used during the colonial period. They also experienced what it was like to be a child during the colonial time period.

See our photo story of this great day!

 Mrs. Walter's ClassMinimize

The first and second grade students in Mrs. Walter’s room have been studying animals. They have researched types of animals from insects to mammals and have been learning about the similarities and differences between them. Some have backbones, some do not. Another characteristic is how animals have babies – some animals lay eggs, and some have live babies. All birds lay eggs and most reptiles lay eggs but there are some reptiles that do not. Almost every mammal has live babies but there are two that lay eggs. Students have learned that mammals and birds are warm-blooded. They have learned that cold-blooded animals are the same temperature as the air around them. It would be hard to be a cold-blooded human on a snowy day. The students have also created a habitat for an animal to live. Their habitat has to have the proper environment to provide for the needs of the animal; shelter, food, water, and air.

 Ms. Truman's ClassMinimize

For the last three weeks, Ms. Truman's classroom has transformed into a mini garden.  Her students started the unit off by collecting seed samples down at the pond.  Then, they examined the seeds under a digital microscope, and later, catergorized them into types of seeds.  After they discussed how seeds travel, they then began to plant.  The class discovered that plants grow at different rates, they must have sunlight, soil, and water to survive, and each part of the plant plays an important role in the growth of the plant.
