Sandburg's Library Media Center is equipped with up-to-date opportunities for students to learn to use technology. With Horizon Electronic Catalog Access, students in first through fifth grades learn to use the electronic catalog to access their own patron record as well as to locate books in Sandburg's Library Media Center and other libraries within the district. Kindergarten students receive help from their classroom teacher, the librarian, and volunteers who model appropriate use of the catalog which they begin to practice using in first and second grade and continue to use throughout their years at Sandburg.
Computer Research Lab - The purpose of the lab is to help students locate research information from a variety of computer databases and to communicate research findings using the latest software technology (i.e. Power Point, Microsoft Word,Excel and Publisher). Databases such as Ebsco, a periodical index, is available for students to use in conjunction with specific classroom assignments. For example, second grade students recently used Internet sites from Williamsburg, Virginia to learn about colonial lifestyles. By downloading graphic logos from colonial times, they were able to use authentic illustrations to accompany their colonial newspaper published using Microsoft word. Students work on integrated technology projects in the computer research lab as well as the computer lab. Both the Library Media Specialist, Sally Tejan and the Technology Coach, Sally Seerveld, work together to coordinate media and technology projects with integrated classroom learning.
