This is a language arts pullout class for gifted and/or highly-able students with language strengths who are in either the ½ multi-grade classroom or in straight 2ND grade. Students will develop their talents in reading and writing from the unit, Journeys and Destinations. This curriculum is specifically designed for gifted students in this age group by the Center for Gifted Education at The College of William and Mary. We will also supplement the unit with writing techniques from Step Up to Writing, Six-Trait Plus One, and possibly selections from Schoolwide Enrichment Model Reading Framework to meet and/or exceed the Littleton curriculum standards for this grade level. Children will spend the remainder of their language arts time with their regular classroom teachers.
Students will come to Cottage daily during part of their regular language arts time until late May. Letters and permission slips will go home to parents before we begin. MAP testing, DRA-II Reading Tests, and most Advanced Learner Plans (ALPs) will be completed before we begin. This class will be taught by both our High Ability Reading Teacher, Mrs. Busch (usually Tues-Thurs.) and by our Facilitator of Gifted and Talented, Mrs. Woods (usually Mon.+Fri). During special testing days, or days that conflict with special classroom events such as field trips, the class will not meet.
